This well traveled locomotive was built for the Jonesboro, Lake City & Eastern Railroad as their #40, but was later renumbered 76 when leased to the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway Company in 1925. In 1947, #76 with sister locomotive #77 was sold to the Mississippian Railway. There, the locomotive faithfully hauled freight until its sale in 1967 to the Penn View Mountain tourist railroad. In 1976 the locomotive was moved to Gettysburg, PA and #76 entered service on the Gettysburg Railroad. In 1999, it was purchased by the Ohio Central where it sat on the railroad’s deadline until the Steam Railroading Institute’s purchase of it in 2005. The locomotive is currently under restoration with the aim of returning it to operating condition.
UPDATE: As of November 2007, SRI is currently reviewing estimates for rebuilding #76's Boiler, and will kick off a fundraising campaign for the next stage of work on November 18th. Stay tuned for further up dates. |
